Handmade Soaps: A Nourishing Treat for Your Skin

I started making small-batch, natural soaps in 2014, shortly after I moved back to Wisconsin. When I was living in Arizona, there was a Soap Maker that I had met at my favorite Phoenix Farmer’s Market who converted me to being a complete believer in natural soaps. Not only did she make a healing herbal bar that did wonders for my skin, but she was just so interesting to talk to… she was a wealth of knowledge on the benefits of certain herbs and oils for the skin. She inspired me to delve into a whole stack of books about soapmaking and medicinal herbs, and I was hooked! Shortly after moving back to the farm, I had all sorts of herbs in the ground, like comfrey, lavender, and calendula, and I spent lots of time daydreaming about different scents and formulations while milking cows. Since we were a dairy farm, I was pretty set on utilizing milk to enrich the bars with it’s moisturizing properties. In a world filled with commercial soaps that often strip the skin of its natural oils and moisture, I was hoping to make soaps that did the opposite. Crafted with care and enriched with wholesome ingredients like organic sunflower oil, organic coconut oil, organic milk, and essential oils, our soaps offer a luxurious, nourishing, and healing experience for the skin.

Here are a few reasons why making the switch to natural, handmade soaps can be a game-changer for your skincare routine:

1. Gentle and Nourishing Formulation: Our soaps are made using gentle, skin-loving ingredients that help to cleanse without harsh chemicals. Organic sunflower oil and coconut oil are renowned for their moisturizing properties, leaving the skin feeling soft, supple, and hydrated. Organic milk adds a touch of luxury and helps to soothe and calm the skin, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin.

2. Aromatherapy Benefits: Essential oils are not only prized for their delightful scents but also for their therapeutic properties. When incorporated into handmade soaps, essential oils can uplift the spirit, promote relaxation, or even help soothe skin conditions like eczema or acne. The natural fragrances linger on the skin, providing a sensory treat with each use.

3. Skin Health from Medicinal Herbs: Some of our soaps use herbs like comfrey, calendula, and lavender, that can provide numerous benefits to your skin health. Comfrey is known for its skin-soothing properties and can help with healing wounds, reducing inflammation, and promoting cell regeneration. Calendula is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect the skin from environmental damage, soothe irritation, and improve skin hydration. Lavender has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help with acne, eczema, and other skin conditions. Together, these herbs can help promote healthy, glowing skin by nourishing, soothing, and protecting your complexion.

4. Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly: Our bar soaps are crafted in small batches using sustainable practices, and packaged in simple, compostable labels rather than plastics. By choosing natural soaps made with organic ingredients, you are not only treating your skin with care but also supporting eco-conscious, local businesses that prioritize sustainability and ethical sourcing.

5. Avoidance of Harsh Chemicals: Synthetic detergents and fragrances commonly found in commercial soaps can be harsh on the skin and may cause irritation or dryness. By opting for natural, handmade soaps, you can avoid exposing your skin (the body’s largest organ!) to potentially harmful chemicals and enjoy the benefits of pure, wholesome ingredients.

The benefits of supporting small, local artisans, and using natural, handmade soaps extend far beyond just cleansing the skin. With nourishing ingredients, delightful scents, and intentional craftsmanship, our soaps can offer a mindful self-care experience that nurtures both body and soul. I encourage you to make the switch to natural soaps and treat your skin to the love and care it deserves. Remember, caring for your skin is an act of self-love, and what better way to show yourself some love than with a nourishing bar of handmade soap crafted with nature's finest ingredients.
